This is an end of an American chestnut beam from a cabin. Since it does not have enough solid wood for a carving, I put nuthatches on it and made it a standalone piece of art.  There are thirteen carved nuthatches in American chestnut wood on the beam.  You can see all four sides here.  The piece won second prize in a Frederick County Art Association show.  About 18” tall.
